For day hikes with light packs (under 15 lbs) on established trails, low-cut hiking shoes deliver the comfort and breathability of a runner with adequate traction and protection. Boots earn their weight when carrying heavy loads, traversing rough terrain, or needing ankle support.

If you hike in wet climates, cross streams regularly, or hike shoulder seasons, GORE-TEX or similar membranes keep your feet dry and prevent blisters. In hot dry climates, non-waterproof uppers breathe much better.

Most hikers need 2–4 short outings before the upper fully molds to the foot. Start with short local hikes rather than committing to a multi-day trip in brand new boots.
